This is an expedient way of getting around Washington and its environs. The Metrorail lines are named for colors (Red, Yellow, Orange, Blue and Green). Station entrances are marked by dark brown pylons capped with the letter ‘‘M” and colored stripes that indicate which Metro lines are available at that station. Easy-to-read route maps are posted inside each station and subway car. Fare cards can be purchased through vending machines inside the stations. Most municipalities augment the Metro system with local bus service.
