View magnificent works of sculpture while skating in the open air and enjoying music from the state-of-the-art sound system. This outdoor skating rink, located across from The National Gallery of Art, is especially enticing at night when all the monuments on the Mall are lit up. Open only in the winter months when it is cold enough to maintain the ice outdoors – usually from very late fall - early-March. Opened in 1996 on land owned by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, The Gardens Ice House is owned and managed by Top Shelf Development Company. This cooperative venture between the public and private sectors has resulted in the construction and operation of this year-round ice-skating complex within Fairland Regional Park. The Gardens Ice House is open every day of the year. Though hockey, figure and speed-skating are at its core, it serves many other recreational needs for enthusiasts of all kinds and ages. From inline skating to ice dancing, The Gardens Ice House welcomes the area’s athletes, beginners and experts alike.

Wheaton Ice Arena is a covered, year-round, NFL-sized rink. There are party rooms, a pro shop and a snack bar. Wheaton Ice offers public sessions as well as group and private lessons. Registration is first-come, first-served. Call for application and fees. During the warmer months, Wheaton Ice Rink hosts roller hockey league play.
