Fort MeadeWelcomeTuesday, April 24, 2007
Welcome to Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. We are dedicated to providing quality support to service members, Department of Defense (DoD) civilian employees, their families, and military retirees. More than 100,000 people daily seek the services Fort Meade offers. Our primary mission is to provide a wide range of services to more than 80 partner organizations from all five services and to several federal agencies including the National Security Agency, the Defense Information School, the Defense Courier Service and the U.S. Army Field Band.
Fort Meade is conveniently located almost midway between the cities of Baltimore and Washington, D.C. and is home to approximately 10,000 military personnel along with about 25,000 civilian employees. Nearly 6,000 family members reside on post. Fort Meade lies approximately four miles east of Interstate 95 and one-half mile east of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, between Maryland State Routes 175 and 198. Fort Meade is located near the communities of Odenton, Laurel, Columbia and Jessup. Temperatures range from a mean daily maximum of 85 degrees Fahrenheit in summer to 30 degrees Fahrenheit in winter. In the winter, the average monthly snowfall is four to 10 inches. In the early stages of the season, springtime is accompanied by high winds and moderate thunderstorms and summers are moderately hot and humid. Autumn is very pleasant with temperatures ranging as high as the mid-60s. We are proud of our community. A new dining facility, the Freedom Inn opened in May 2006 and Picerne Military Housing is renovating old homes and building new homes to provide a better quality of living for the families that reside on post. Fort Meade personnel and families take pride in their jobs, their neighborhoods and their schools. We’re proud of our past and look forward to a bright future as the post goes through a period of major growth and development in the next decade. In addition to the many recreational activities available on Fort Meade, the region is full of interesting places to visit. You can visit the historical sites of Annapolis; tour the White House in Washington, D.C.; or attend a football, basketball or baseball game with one of the many professional or college teams in the Maryland, D.C., and Northern Virginia areas. This guide is a special edition to celebrate Fort Meade’s 90th Birthday. Throughout the guide you will find significant historical photographs and facts to help you share in our celebration. As always, this guide was prepared to help you. Use it often to find information, including telephone numbers, addresses, and websites of the offices and facilities at Fort Meade. We hope your stay here will be enjoyable and your tour of duty professionally rewarding.
