Children who live in Maryland and are 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2006, are required to attend kindergarten and must register at their assigned school.

The pre-kindergarten program in Anne Arundel County public elementary schools selects four-year-olds based on economic and education need. If applying due to economic need, proof of family income will be required.

When registering a child for pre-kindergarten or kindergarten, parents must bring the following: child’s original birth certificate or birth record, copy of child’s immunization record, two proofs of residency (rental agreement, current phone bill etc.) and a Social Security card is requested but not required.

If you are applying for pre-kindergarten due to economic need verification of total combined household income (W-2 and 1040 statements with one current pay stub). If these are not available, bring three current paycheck stubs for each person employed and additional sources of income, including child support, Temporary Cash Assistance, rental income etc. For more information, contact Linda Redwine Bell, School Liaison Officer at (301) 677-1227.

‘‘MacArthur Junior High School began in 1964 and spent the first two years of its infancy in what became known, affectionately, as ‘‘The Barracks.” The school is located on Fort Meade Installation. Currently, the school has approximately 1150 students.

In September of 1966, our present facility opened for seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students. Following the educational trends of the 1970’s, MacArthur Junior High School became MacArthur Middle School. In 1977 the ninth graders moved to Meade Senior High and MacArthur picked up the off-post sixth graders. Decreased enrollment of elementary schools caused the return of sixth graders to the feeder elementary schools with the 1982-83 school year.

In August of 1997, MacArthur split into two schools, MacArthur and Meade Middle. Both schools were located in the MacArthur facility with separate faculty and staff until the completion of Meade Middle in 1998. Both schools completed the 1997-98 school year with seventh and eighth grades only. In September 1998 the sixth graders from feeder schools joined the middle schools. MacArthur’s feeder elementary schools include Harman, Manor View, Maryland City, Pershing Hill, and West Meade.”
