Fort Meade enables critical national security missions by providing its customers and community the facilities and infrastructure they require, the quality of life they deserve, and a safe, secure environment in which to work and live. Fort Meade has the fourth largest workforce of Army installations in the continental United States with approximately 40,000 military, civilian and contractor personnel.
The Directorate of Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (DMWR) at Fort Meade is comprised of 21 programs that range from Child Care to Automotive Skills; intramural sports to spousal Army Family Team Building.
Fort Meade's structure is provided by the Installation Management Command (IMCOM) and the Northeast Region (NERO). IMCOM oversees all facets of installation operations to include construction, family care, food management, environmental programs, morale and well-being programs, public works, and installation funding.
The Department of Defense announced its recommendation to increase operations and military activities at Fort George G. Meade, Md., as part of the Congressionally-authorized 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process.

Fort George G. Meade became an active Army installation in 1917. Authorized by an Act of Congress in May 1917, it was one of 16 cantonments built for troops drafted for the war with the Central Powers in Europe.
