Andrews Air Force Base Guide

Introduction
Welcome Andrews newcomers and visitors!

Welcome to Andrews
The 316th Wing, under the auspices of the Air Force District of Washington, assumed host-unit responsibilities at Andrews Air Force Base in June 2006. The mission of the 316 WG is to provide contingency-response capability critical to national security. This capability includes emergency reaction rotary-wing airlift for the National Capital Region, combat-ready Airmen for Air and Space Expeditionary Forces, and a secure installation and robust infrastructure to support base organizations.

History
Andrews Air Force Base honors Lt. Gen. Frank Maxwell Andrews, one of the most influential leaders behind the creation of today's modern Air Force. General Andrews was a significant figure in the early days of the Army Air Corps. He was often called “Marshall's Airman,“ referring to General of the Army George C. Marshall, who was the Army Chief of Staff. General Andrews was General Marshall's main advisor concerning aviation matters.

Team Andrews Line-up
The 316th Wing staff directly supports the 316th Wing commander in the functioning of various wing and base operations.

Getting to Andrews
Andrews enjoys a varied but fairly moderated climate. The summers are usually warm and humid with July being the warmest month. The average daily temperatures range from 65 to 87 degrees Fahrenheit. Extreme maximum temperatures sometimes reach more than 100 degrees. During midsummer, thunderstorms occur on about one third of the month.

Getting Settled
Upon arriving on base, your first stop should be the newcomers' 24-hour arrival point, located at the Gateway Inn, Bldg. 1375, on Arkansas Road. The personnel there will assist newcomers in obtaining quarters and contacting their sponsor or commander's support staff.

The newly remodeled Andrews Commissary stands ready to provide complete customer service in all departments. Patrons may choose a full line variety of products provided by the grocery, meat and produce departments.
