Fort Detrick celebrated Earth Day with food, fun, games and the planting of a dogwood tree at the Community Activities Center April 16.
Children from the pre-kindergarten class at the Child, Youth and School Services assisted Garrison Commander Col. Steven Middlecamp and other Fort Detrick leaders in shoveling dirt around the base of the tree. Maryland congressman John Delaney served as guest speaker for the event. “I think our military has really been a model for how to think about environmental stewardship, conservation and the energy future of this country,” said Delaney, of Fort Detrick during the event.
The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease’s hosted a bug display for children. Several vendors including Frederick County Community College, Frederick County Animal Control, Frederick County TransIT, and the Fort Detrick Fire Department, hosted exhibits, according to Melanie Skeens, Fort Detrick environmental outreach coordinator.
“The event was well received from our workforce,” added Skeens.
