On Feb. 19, 1945, the United States invaded the island of Iwo Jima as part of the Pacific “island hopping” campaign to combat enemy forces. The Battle for Iwo Jima lasted 31 days and resulted in a U.S. victory that secured a strategic foot hold for follow on forces.
