Workers prepare the site for the installation of modular trailers which will house the temporary dining facility in front of the Tower at Walter Reed Bethesda while Café 8901 in Building 9 undergoes renovations scheduled to last until September.
Walter Reed Bethesda’s Nutrition Services Department continues its year-long renovation project of Café 8901, and will soon shut the doors to the facility in the basement of Building 9 for major construction.
While inpatient room service operations will still operate out of the basement location to support patient room service, new locations to meet the food service needs of staff and visitors are scheduled to open in early March. Locations for food services include the modular trailers in front of the Tower (Building 1), and kiosks in Building 9 and the Heroes Zone (between Buildings 3 and 5).
The modular food trailers in front of the Tower will operate seven days a week, including holidays, and feature hot entrees, a salad bar, a deli bar, soup and more. In addition, the facility will accommodate 120 customers for sit-down dining, and all items will be available for takeout. Hours of operation are:
Breakfast: 6 to 10 a.m.
Lunch: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Dinner: 4 to 6:30 p.m.
The two kiosks, called "Café 8901 Express," will be located in Building 9 near the escalators and main pharmacy and on the second floor of the Heroes zone (Buildings 3/5). They are expected to be fully operational in early March.
The Building 9 kiosk will be open from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. weekdays, and from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on weekends and holidays, and will feature soups, sandwiches, salads, burgers, fresh fruit, pizza and more. Café 8901 late night meal service will continue operations from this kiosk.
The kiosks in the Heroes Zone will be open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays and will include similar features to the Building 9 Café Express kiosk.
The Nutrition Services Department staff will provide additional updates on the renovations that are expected to last through September 2013 via postmaster messages, posters in the facility, and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) intranet.
