“It's been a well-kept secret,” said NEX Bethesda Barber and Beauty Salon Manager Norris Sam. “A lot of people visit the store and just shop on the upper level and are not aware that the barber shop and beauty salon is actually here and the services that we offer.”
According to Sam, the salon was built to offer a wide range of services to meet everyone's needs, while supporting military members and families.
“The shop as a whole was built with the mindset of taking care of the customer,” he said. “The NEX vision is to be the first choice for Sailors and Navy families. Our mission is to provide quality goods and services at a savings, and to support Navy quality of life programs.”
Sam added that the reason the beauty salon likes to take care of families is because a family's support makes military service possible.
“Behind every Soldier, there's a great family: a great mother, a great wife, and children, and our goal is to take care of them as well,” said Sam.
Jennifer Spinelli, a mother who works full-time and likes to run in her spare time, said she likes to stop by the beauty salon for an occasional pedicure.
“My husband is a surgeon at the hospital and I am a full-time working mom, so my son is at daycare here on base,” said Spinelli. “So, any time that I can have with my family, versus running around doing errands – It is very convenient to have the spa here, and all of the services that they provide with the new Exchange.”
Spinelli said the price of services at the Barber & Beauty Salon is also quite reasonable.
“The cost is very good, and I think the service they provide here is better than anywhere else I've gone. They spend more time with you, and you don't feel like you're rushed.”
NSAB NEX Marketing and Public Relations Manager Rico Macaraeg said they hired staff that have extensive education and experience to join their team at the beauty salon.
“The great thing about the Navy Exchange salon and barber shop is that we have the same caliber of professionals that you would find at a premiere salon down the street, and you can get the same highlight and cut for half the price,” said Macaraeg. “Our staff offers their high education and services to serve military families at a price that's affordable.”
Services offered at the Barber and Beauty Salon include hair cutting, hair coloring, highlights, hair-straightening services, conditioning treatments, manicures and pedicures, eyebrow waxing, and soon express facials, said Sam.
Teresa Oyler, operation service manager for Navy Exchange Bethesda, said the base has always had a barbershop, but the new salon has introduced expanded service features.
“The nice thing about the new store is that it is ADA compliant (wheelchair accessible) and wounded warrior friendly,” said Oyler. “Right now, we also have plans to remodel the hospital barbershop (located on Main Street) to bring it up to be ADA compliant and wounded warrior friendly.”
The Navy Exchange Bethesda Barber Shop and Beauty Salon is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. No appointments are necessary, and walk-ins are accepted.
