Secretary of the Army John McHugh and Chief of Staff of the Army General Ray Odierno recognize retiring members of Congress for their public service during the Twilight Tattoo July 25 on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall's Whipple Field. McHugh praised the legislators' nearly 180 years of public service, saying the greater Army family has "no greater friends — no more forceful champions — than those great individuals we pause to recognize tonight." McHugh lauded the group's sacrifices and personal commitment to service members, and said the Army benefitted from these legislators whose "guiding political principle was the best and strongest defense for our nation." Odierno thanked the U.S. senators and congressmen for their "steadfast support to Soldiers and their Families during their tenure in Congress," and praised them for further demonstrating their commitment to ensuring the Army has what it needs to be successful.
