The Quantico Bulldog men’s varsity basketball team took a chomp out of the opportunity for a Fort Myer Generals undefeated regular season March 17.
In their 107-99 Washington Area Military Athletic Conference season finale victory, the quick-starting Bulldogs (12-2) accelerated to a double-digit lead by the halfway point of the first half and outscored the Generals 16 to 5 in the first five minutes after halftime to blitz the Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Army team and end the Generals bid for an undefeated 2011-2012 season.
“The biggest thing was that we didn’t come ready to play,” said Generals coach Marcus Hall. “Anytime you play against Quantico, they bring an intensity from the opening tip. We weren’t able to match that intensity. It was kind of even in the first half; we thought if we came out to start in the second half and matched their intensity . . .but they were clicking on all cylinders today. I don’t think what we could have done mattered.”
An early omen of the outcome took place during the opening at the Fort Myer JBM-HH fitness center. The Bulldogs initially broke the Generals full-court pressure and proceeded to break the game wide open with at-will fast break points, second-chance baskets and three-point field goal bombs. At one point in the second half, Quantico opened a lead as big as 22 points against the Generals.
Quantico’s Chris Williams led all scorers with a plus-30 point performance while Bulldog teammates Sean Seaman and Christopher Harris both scored 17 points. In defeat, the Generals received a 22-point effort from Jamar Keyes and 21 from Deon Coleman and were forced to play catch-up for 35 of the game’s 40 minutes.
Next up for the Generals and the Bulldogs is the WAMAC Men’s Basketball Tournament which will be held March 30- April 1 at JBM-HH’s Smith Gym. The Generals begin play on Saturday, March 31 at 9 a.m., and Quantico’s tourney debut is set for 11 a.m. March 31. The Generals own a 2-1 record against the Bulldogs this season, but another rematch could take place between the two teams at 5 p.m. on March 31.
