Welcome to Dahlgren! The Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department (MWR) at NSF Dahlgren offers a wide range of recreational facilities and activities for active duty military, retired military, reservists on active duty, Department of Defense civilian employees (civil service and non-appropriated), family members in all of these categories and NSA South Potomac contractors and their family members. While at NSF Dahlgren you can enjoy a wide range of activities from outdoor recreation, sports leagues and tournaments to a year-round indoor aquatics center, fitness center and the state-of-the-art bowling center, Cannonball Lanes. Our staff of trained personnel invites you to experience hospitality – Dahlgren style!
The MWR Administrative Office is located in Building 205 (just outside of main gate), where the MWR director’s office is located. If you are interested in working for one of our Fleet and Family Readiness Programs, jobs can be found posted on the CNIC website at https://www.cnic.navy.mil/ndw/Jobs/OpenPositions/index.htm. Site includes application forms and instructions as to where to mail applications. MWR employment opportunities are posted in the main office, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Full- time, part-time and flexible positions are routinely available.
The Fitness Center is located on Dahlgren Road and features a newly refinished full-size gymnasium floor that is used for many activities such as basketball, volleyball and dodge ball. The
facility offers a fully-equipped fitness
center with circuit training machines
and free weights. In the cardio room you will be able to use top-of-the-line
treadmills, cycles, elliptical machines, steppers and a tread climber while being entertained by closed circuit TV. There are two racquetball courts, a group exercise room, saunas and new lockers in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms. Treat yourself to a Microfit Assessment,
personal trainers and a variety of group fitness programs designed to help you get into your best shape. In addition, there is an outdoor hockey rink/basketball court located adjacent to Building 962. This
outdoor court is available on a first come, first served basis, or by reservation.

The Fitness Center offers a variety of classes five days a week, which includes Spinning, Cardio Boxing, Stobo, Power Yoga, Kettlebells and Strength and Stability. Please contact the Fitness Center for more information. You can find a schedule at any MWR facility or at the Fitness Center.
NSF Dahlgren’s MWR offers a variety of sports leagues that are open to all those with access to the base. Information and announcements on all sports leagues are posted in The South Potomac Pilot, NSF Dahlgren’s base newspaper, or at the Fitness Center.
The soccer field on base is located near the main gate and is used for leagues in the spring and the fall. Soccer leagues run through the MWR sports program in the spring and fall.
There are two softball fields on base. The primary field (Duke Field) is located across the street from the Fitness Center and is lighted. The second field (Fire House Field) is located beside the fire station on base and is not lighted. Use of these fields may be scheduled by contacting the Fitness Center. Co-ed and men's leagues are run through the MWR sports program in the spring and fall.
MWR offers a flag football league in the fall.
MWR offers racquetball leagues at
various times during the year.
MWR offers a basketball league in the fall/winter.
5K and 10K Runs
MWR schedules a variety of 5K and 10K runs on base with prizes awarded in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Schedules for all fun runs can be found in The South Potomac Pilot, NSF Dahlgren’s base newspaper, or at the Fitness Center.
MWR has two tennis courts on base. These are located adjacent to Building 962. The courts are for open play on a first come, first served basis.
Isshinryu Karate lessons are offered throughout the year for children through adults with classes for both beginner and advanced students. For more information on this program, please contact the staff at the Fitness Center (540) 653-8580.
Ballet, jazz and hip hop dance classes are offered for children / teens ages 5–18 through adults throughout the year. For more information on this program, please contact the Fitness Center, (540) 653-8580.
Aquatics Center/ Swimming Pool
Located on Jenkins Road, the year-round indoor aquatic facility includes a full-size swimming pool and a separate training pool. Pool passes may be purchased annually or monthly at the Fitness Center during the winter months and at the Aquatics Center during the summer months. MWR offers swimming lessons for all levels of expertise and ages, as well as aqua aerobics classes, a lap swim program, lifeguarding and water safety instructor classes. The Aquatics Center hosts local swim meets and an active swim team club for interested youth. The facility is available to rent for private parties and hosts special activities throughout the year.
Cannonball Lanes (Bowling Center)
Located in Building 135, the Bowling Center is open seven days a week. This 10-lane bowling alley features all the newest AMF equipment, locker rental, resale bowling items, winter and summer leagues for both youth and adult, a variety of monthly special activities and open bowling. Lanes can be reserved for private parties, birthday parties and lessons are available upon request.
Game Time Sports Grill
Located within Cannonball Lanes, Game Time offers a variety of burgers, pizza, wings, wraps and salads are also among the favorites. Dining lounge has Wi-Fi hotspot and televisions.
Located within Cannonball Lanes and part of Game Time Sports Grill, the café proudly serves Seattle’s Best Coffee. Fresh brewed hot or iced coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, espresso, teas and hot chocolate.
Information Tickets & Tours
The Information, Tickets & Tours (ITT) office is located in Building 144 on Jenkins Road, across from the Navy Family Housing Office and Lincoln Military Housing Office (Building 142). Hours of operation are Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ITT posts all MWR activities and events on base and offers discount tickets to attractions such as amusement parks, movie theaters, sightseeing destinations, ski resorts, and sporting events. Vacation packages, cruise packages and discount vouchers are also available. Brochures highlighting local tourist destinations and maps of the area are available for customers to pick up, as well as information on the Military Travel Voucher Program. Fax and notary public services are offered at ITT. Newcomers to NSF Dahlgren are encouraged to visit ITT for information on the area’s activities and opportunities.
The Liberty Center is located in building 106 next to Cannonball Lanes and offers recreational activities year-round for single or unaccompanied active duty military personnel. The Liberty Center is a terrific place for single military members to relax and enjoy. The center is equipped with pool tables, computers, video gaming systems, gaming tables, a kitchenette, a big screen TV, wireless internet access, fax machine, 8 mm movies and more! Weekly and monthly activities, sporting events and cookouts on base or group outings to recreational facilities and tourist destinations off base are also offered through the Liberty Center. The center is open Monday and Wednesday 11 a.m. - 10 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 8 a.m. - 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. – Midnight, Sunday Noon - 10 p.m.
Craftech is located on Jenkins Road across from the Aquatics Center and offers a variety of craft classes and custom creation options for customers. Classes include, but are not limited to, ceramics, framing and matting, stained glass, decorative painting and a variety of creative holiday gift items. Custom creations include full-color printing and laser engraving with your design or ours on coffee mugs, t-shirts, plaques, pen sets, tiles, mouse pads, and more. A full line of team awards and gift items are available also.
Craftech also offers a selection of ceramic, stained glass and framing supplies, CRICUT Cutter for your scrapbook lettering, die cuts and new programmable embroidery machine. Other craft supplies are available as special purchase items. Craftech is open Monday - Thursday 9 a.m. -7 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and the staff is always willing to work with our valued customers.
Auto Skills Center/Gear Issue & Equipment Rental/RV Storage Office
The Auto Skills Center/Gear Issue and Equipment Rental/RV Storage Office is located directly behind Cannonball Lanes Bowling Center and is open Monday and Thursday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., Tuesday and Friday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Wednesday and Sunday closed. Customers may self-service their vehicles using the center's tools and equipment. Parts may be special ordered with same or next-day delivery. Items carried in stock include oil, oil filters and air filters. Tire mounting and balancing service, oil change and A/C recharge are offered by our staff.
Located within the Auto Skills Center, Gear Issue and Equipment Rental offer a selection of recreation equipment for fishing, camping, picnics, special events, sporting equipment and more. Rentals can be daily, weekly or for the weekend. RV Storage Office is also located in the center. The RV Storage Complex provides 32 year-round vehicle storage spaces and can accommodate small to large recreational vehicles at a nominal fee. Call during hours of operation for details and pricing.
The NSF Dahlgren Library is located next to the Aquatics Center on Jenkins Road and offers a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction works, movies for check-out, audio books, daily papers, reading lounge, free internet through Library computers, Wi-Fi hotspot, copier and a fax machine for patron use.
Every Friday from 10 - 11 a.m. is children’s story time and crafts. The library has many events offered throughout the year including a monthly book discussion group, child friendly PAWS for Reading program to improve reading skills by reading aloud to a therapy dog, summer reading programs, adult book clubs and holiday activities.
The newly renovated Dowell Community House is available to rent by calling the Information, Tickets and Tours Office for private parties, receptions, meetings and other functions. With a park, outside porch and pavilion area, your party may enjoy the outdoors as well. Please call (540) 653-8785 to make a reservation.
Child Development Center
The Child Development Center (CDC) provides a full-time child development program for children six weeks to Kindergarten. Developmentally appropriate activities that nurture the child
socially, emotionally, physically and
intellectually are provided through the
use of Creative Curriculum© from Teaching Strategies. The center and its new addition of Mobile Learning Classrooms (MLC’s) are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hourly care is available on a space-available basis. The CDC is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), holds DoD certification, and participates in the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).
Child Development Homes
The Child Development Homes Program (CDH) provides full and part-time home-based care, including space available hourly care and limited shift care. Military and DoD spouses are trained to provide the same high standards of care in their homes as at the CDC, part of Child and Youth Programs Naval District Washington. Homes are monitored and inspected monthly to make sure that they meet the Navy child care standards. The CDH program holds DoD certification and participates in the USDA CACFP.
Youth Activities Center
The Youth Activities Center is located on Jenkins Road next to the Aquatics Center. Open Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. –
6 p.m., the YAC offers a before and after school program during the school year,
as well as a summer camp for youth school ages K to 12. As an affiliate of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), the Youth Center participates in eight BGCA core programs. They include Triple Play (a fitness program), Smart Moves (education about peer pressure and social concerns), Keystone Club and Torch Club (organizations that work on making youth civically aware), Power Hour (a homework assistance program), fine arts and photography programs that allow youth to compete nationally
with other BGCA club members. The Navy FitFactor program is a vital part of the YAC program. In addition, the teen program operates on Friday evenings
6- 8:30 p.m. A Saturday open recreation program also operates throughout the school year for youth school age K – 12 where children have access to the table and board games, computers, music,
crafts and children books. The YAC also hosts several youth dances and a variety
of special family events throughout the year.
Gray's Landing on the Potomac Restaurant (Formerly the Douglas T. Gray III General Mess)
On October 1, 2009 the Douglas T. Gray General Mess (Galley) became a Navy MWR–operated restaurant at Naval Support Facility Dahlgren. The new restaurant serves ALL base personnel. Patrons are invited for breakfast, lunch and dinner, which include hot entrees, grill items, made-to-order sandwich deli, extended salad bar and soup bar, desserts, grab-n-go items and take-out. Patrons who are not on a meal pass pay for lunch and dinner with includes soup and salad, dessert and beverage. Patrons can pay for full meals or just soup and salad options. For those in a hurry, there is a grab-n-go option as well. Patrons on a meal pass must provide their CAC and sign in for their daily meals.
