Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Michael Miller welcomed the brigade back to a new school year during a series of superintendent’s calls for each class at Alumni Hall Aug. 18-19.
Only days after Plebe Parents’ Weekend and the end of Plebe Summer, the Brigade of Midshipmen began returning to the Yard for Reform, signaling the start of the fall semester. For the plebes, it was their first encounter with the body of upperclass midshipmen who will be largely responsible for their training throughout the year.
Miller reminded the midshipmen of many challenges and opportunities that life at the Naval Academy brings.
“It’s a different college experience. I know sometimes it doesn’t seem like a better college experience, but in the long run it is just that,” said Miller. “I can almost guarantee very few of your contemporaries in high school get the opportunity to do what you did this summer.”
Miller highlighted some of the milestones each class will face this year, including increased freedom and responsibility for the 3rd class midshipmen who just completed their plebe year.
Miller went on to talk about the high expectations he has for the midshipmen, particularly with regard to issues like drugs, alcohol abuse and sexual harassment.
“You can’t do drugs and stay here,” he said. “The zero tolerance policy in the Navy is very clear. When you violate those rules, you’re well beyond my ability to save you. You’re gone. The same is true for sexual harassment and assault.
“I expect you to be responsible, and it’s not just me. It’s the nation. They see the representation of the American experience, the American dream,” said Miller. “That’s exactly what you all are.”
Finally, in what has become a signature move for Miller, he pulled out his own U.S. Navy sword.
“No speech from the superintendent would be complete without a sword,” he said, to a round of applause from the midshipmen.
He described the blade of Toledo steel, comparing the balance of the well-honed blade to the balance of leadership, academics, athletics and character that he wants to see the midshipmen achieve while at the academy.
