There is a time to be philosophical and a time to be practical, and now is the latter; therefore, as opposed to my usual whimsy, the following points are important to remember as we move through August: parking on the installation will become more challenging as the month proceeds.

I know that many of you are looking forward to additional parking with the opening of the Multi-purpose garage (MUPS), but due to the number of new staff and patients arriving, parking in that garage is going to be scarce. If you can find a way to get to work other than in your car, do it.

In addition, both the North and South gates will be completed in August, and there is a new signal added to help egress out of the North gate. That said, given past experience, it will take a while to become acclimated with each change, so expect delays getting on and off the installation. If you can find a way to get to work other than in your car, do it.

While construction is nearly complete, that is not to say it is winding down. Getting around the installation in a car will continue to pose problems because there is still a large number of contractors who need to be here to put finishing touches on all of the BRAC work and the NEX construction continues. If you can find a way to get to work other than in your car, do it.

Ongoing roadway work surrounding NSA Bethesda, in conjunction with the additional load that results from BRAC transition moves, will likely make commute times longer after one gets off the installation. If you can find a way to get to work other than in your car, do it.

We will have additional security on hand during August to help with traffic flow and to ensure parking guidance is followed. Those who choose to park in unauthorized locations do so at their own risk. If you can find a way to get to work other than in your car, do it.

Parking in surrounding neighborhoods is strongly discouraged. If you choose to drive, and cannot find a place on campus an option may be to park at pay to park garages nearby. If you can find a way to get to work other than in your car, do it.

We will continue to push information on parking and traffic issues through multiple mediums. Please check the various sites daily to alleviate the heartache, pain, and potentially a parking ticket that will accompany not knowing. If you can find a way to get to work other than in your car, do it.

I do believe we will get through this. It will take a bit of time to sort out, but on the good side, the waiting is over. I want to thank each of you beforehand for your patience and understanding. Welcome to our new Marine and Army Wounded Warriors and our Army staff. And one last time, if you can find a way to get to work other than in your car, do it.

Commanding Officer

NSA Bethesda sends,
