The Naval Academy Midshipman Action Group (MAG), received the Excellence in Mentoring Award in the Higher Education Division May 18 from Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Maryland Mentoring Partnership.
The award was presented at the eighth annual MentorZing event at the Baltimore Waterfront Marriott.
The annual MentorZing Gala, held by the Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Maryland Mentoring Partnership, celebrates and honors excellence in mentoring across Maryland.
“The MentorZing recognition highlights the tremendous commitment that the Midshipmen Action Group has for our community at large through over 20 programs and 21 thousand hours of volunteer time this past academic year,” said Naval Academy Community Relations Director Miriam Stanicic. “As mentors and role models, midshipmen enjoy giving their time to the children of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program on a continuous basis.”
Established in 1992 as a community relations program organized and maintained by the Brigade of Midshipmen, MAG currently offers a variety of educational, environmental and social service volunteer projects. Coordinated with community partners from the Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas, as well as regional and national partners, MAG averages over 20,000 hours of community service annually.
MAG provides reliable volunteers willing to offer their time, talent and energy. MAG also hopes to better prepare midshipmen for future service by encouraging peer leadership, teamwork, character development, morale, selflessness and goodwill towards others.
